The President hosted a town hall in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on health insurance reform, telling the crowd, "I don't think government bureaucrats should be meddling, but I also don't think insurance company bureaucrats should be meddling. That's the health care system I believe in." The President was introduced by Lori, a woman who can’t find coverage because of her medical condition. We all know someone like Lori who has been discriminated against because of pre-existing conditions, and can't receive the care they need. This is a personal issue for the President, who recounted his mother's battle with insurance companies as she battled with cancer in the last months of her life.
The President outlined how his plan will end these unfair, and often deadly, practices:

We launched www.WhiteHouse.gov/realitycheck this week to knock down the rumors and lies that are floating around the internet. You can find the information below, and much more, there. For example, we've just added a video of Nancy-Ann DeParle from our Health Reform Office tackling a viral email head on.
Sotomayor Sworn In As Supreme Court Justice (VIDEO)

Sonia Sotomayor has been sworn in as America's first Hispanic Supreme Court justice, after a summer of debate over her nomination.
Justice Sotomayor, 55, becomes only the third woman to sit on the court.

I've seen our health care system up close over the past year.
I'm fortunate to have the finest medical care in the world. But I've seen far too many people unable to obtain the care they need because they can't afford it.
That's wrong. It's got to change, and it's about to change.
We're fighting for legislation in Congress to fix our broken health care system. Under President Obama's leadership, Republicans and Democrats are working together to write a bill that will guarantee good care at long last to everyone who needs it.
But we'll need strong nationwide support to produce the 60 Senate votes that will probably be required to avoid a filibuster and actually pass the bill. I need your support. Please sign our petition for quality, affordable health care for every American:
http://www.democraticmajority.com/healthcare
Our legislation includes five major provisions:We give Americans better choices for health insurance. We follow a simple principle: If you like the coverage you have now, you can keep it. If you don't like your current coverage, our bill offers new and more affordable options. We'll negotiate with insurance companies to keep costs low, make it illegal for companies to deny coverage because of pre-existing conditions, and give Americans the option to enroll in a public insurance program.
We reduce the cost of health care. We'll crack down on fraud and abuse, and we'll reduce red tape to keep costs down. We also make sure doctors use the most effective therapies to treat illnesses, so patients aren't paying extra for treatments that don't work.
We put new emphasis on prevention. The best way to treat a disease is to prevent it from ever striking, or to catch it at an early stage. By giving every American access to affordable health care, we'll enable millions of people to be screened for diabetes, heart disease, cancer and depression.
We bring more help to the elderly and the disabled. We make it easier for these Americans to live independently. We help pay for home upgrades such as wheelchair ramps, and for regular home care to enable people to live in their own homes, not nursing homes.
Finally, we develop a better health workforce, delivering modern and responsive care. We invest in doctors, nurses, and other health professionals to meet the needs of patients more effectively for years to come. These changes won't be easy to enact -- but we can't afford to wait, and we can't afford to fail.
Show your support for health reform that will benefit all our citizens, reduce the financial burdens on our nation's people and businesses, and put our health care industry on a strong and sustainable basis for the future:
I'll be working hard to pass this bill in the weeks ahead, and I hope you'll be there with me.
Thank you so much for the very real difference you can make in achieving this great goal we share.
Sincerely,
Senator Edward M. Kennedy
President Obama implies that he does not want to risk the failure of getting a Healthcare Reform Bill at the expense of ideological purity. He states that if we were starting from scratch he understands that the Single Payer Healthcare insurance would be preferable and that given that healthcare is 1/6th of our economy that we probably could not make that drastic transition.
Can you imagine if Abraham Lincoln said..."The infrastructure, as it pertains to slavery reform, has already been set in place for the last 400 years...therefore slavery reform must include the infrastructure already in place. To follow up with, "Don't get me wrong, if the infrastructure wasn't already there and I could start from scratch...my slavery reform would include " THE COMPLETE ABOLISHMENT OF SLAVERY.
BUT INSTEAD: WE'LL WORK WITH THE CURRENT INFRASTRUCTURE TO BETTER THE LIVES OF SLAVES...
WE'LL GIVE A TAX CREDIT FOR ALL SLAVEOWNERS WHO FOLLOW "THE SLAVERY KINDNESS ACT."
1. 2- 20 MINUTE BREAKS TO EAT...
2. ALLOWING PREGNANT WOMEN TO GIVE BIRTH IN THE BARN INSTEAD OF THE CUSTOMARY FIELD..
3. ALL SLAVEOWNERS WHO RAPE SLAVE WOMEN MUST GIVE PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT TO THE OFFSPRING...IE. INSIDE WORK....LIMITED HUMAN RIGHTS ETC.
GET THE JIST?
SINGLE PAYER/PUBLIC HEALTHCARE IS THE ANSWER....
INFRASTRUCTURE/HEALTH INSURANCE COMPANIES/LOBBYISTS? "BULLDOOSE THEM!"
Hi,
I am 70 years old, have never been one to stick my neck out, just grumbled and griped about the way things are going. Always felt that nothing could be done to make a difference. Maybe you can relate.
This last year, through my involvement in the Obama Campaign for Change, I found that something CAN be done differently. We have an historic President; we have an opportunity to really make changes that are desperately needed.
OK, so the financial instutions are being bailed out and are still greedy (fill in your own word). We have to have banks. And the auto companies are being helped and handled. We need industry here in America.
BUT, we do not need the insurance industry to control our health. Right now, the Senate Finance Committee is holding hearings on health care reform. Guess who is NOT allowed at the table of panelists? Got it! The health care professionals (doctors) who want real reform by instituting a single payer plan that will cover everyone. Senator Max Baucus, who control the committee, says he is not including it because "It won't pass." Well, some people said you can't elect an African American for President.
The insurance providers said they would reduce the RATE of increase over the next 10 years saving over a billion dollars. What is not said is that this "savings" comes from the amount that they plan to charge us in addition to the amount we ALREADY pay. By the way, they are already back-pedaling on that promise.
The United Health CEO has just put out a proposal to limit the use of "expensive" diagnostic tools as a method of saving money. One of the tools mentioned was MRIs. Recently, I learned of a lady here in my town who was denied an MRI for 9 months. When her doctor finally was allowed to use an MRI, it was found that cancer, which could have been discovered at an early stage, had spread threateningly. Adversaries of the government single payer plan keep harping on that "the government bureaucrats" will make your health decisions. Right now, the insurance processors, who want to keep their jobs, are making your health decisions at the direction of the insurance company CEOs and boards, who are just as greedy (you fill in the word) as the Finance CEOs.
What the CEO of United Health does not say is that we could save multi-millions, by doing away with his salary, bonuses and other financial benefits that are paid for by the illness and pain of ordinary people.
I am calling on everyone, who has a life and who has a family that is precious, to get involved in the health care reform issue. Tell Organizing For America and President Obama your stories. Talk to your family, friends and neighbors, and total strangers about what is happening in health care. Hold meetings to organize and inform. This is a campaign just like the Presidential campaign last year. While that campaign will affect the next 4 to 8 years of our government administration, this campaign can affect the nation for generations to come.
Thanks for looking in.

Senate Rejects Limit on Credit-Card Interest RatesBy CARL HULSEDespite complaints that banks and credit card companies are gouging customers by charging outrageous interest rates, the Senate on Wednesday easily turned back an effort to cap interest rates at 15 percent. The effort by Senator Bernie Sanders, the Vermont independent, drew only 33 votes and needed 60, with a bipartisan group of 60 senators opposing it asthe Senate pushed its credit card overhaul toward the finish line. Some Democrats and consumer groups have said that an interest cap is needed to put real teeth into an otherwise solid bill.http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/05/13/senate-rejects-limit-on-credit-card-interest-rates/?partner=rss&emc=rss

Hi everyone... This is the chapter 13th bankruptcy bill that has the teeth to save our citizens from home foreclosure. This bill permits non-partial bankruptcy judges to modify loans by reducing interest rates, extending the loan repayment term and reducing home prices to market value. Therefore, it will make homes affordable again thus, stopping the growing homeless population. PS. BANKS HATE THE IDEA...THEY WANT ALL THE CONTROL OVER MAINSTREET. THIS LAW LEVELS THE PLAYING FIELD. CALL/WRITE YOUR CONGRESS. THIS LAW MUST BE PUSHED TO THE TOP OF OFA'S AGENDA. BILL H.R. 1105 GovTrack: H.R. 200: Text of Legislation, Reported in House

THE BRIEFING ROOM • THE BLOG Friday, March 6th, 2009 at 8:13 pm
The First Lady at Miriam’s Kitchen
Yesterday Mrs. Obama served food at Miriam’s Kitchen, a local non-profit organization that provides healthy, nutritious meals to the homeless in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Obama discussed the need to support food banks and soup kitchens around the country given that things will get worse before they get better. (View full size) She said Miriam’s Kitchen "is an example of what we can do, as a country and as a community, to help folks when they’re down. We’re all going to need one another in these times. We’re going to need to keep lifting each other up, in prayer and in hope."
Our schools here in NV are in terrible shape and something must be done. Many parents don't seem to grasp the urgeny of the situations we find ourselves in right now. Our schools already rank in the bottom of the nation when it comes to funding, graduation rates, and test scores. Yet we rank high on all the things none of us should be proud of like drop out rates and teen pregnancy. We can do better for our kids and now is the time to stop sitting around and allowing our children to continue to be short changed. Our kids deserve the best education possible. Yet the state of Nevada has decided that educating our kids is not important. I'm looking for those parents who want to do something about the state of education in the state. On Sunday Feb 8th I'm holding a house meeting to organize parents to get involved in schools and start working to make our schools better. Come out and support our kids and the education initiatives facing our state. Let's put our brains together and figure a way to improve our schools. Each and every parent has a part to play and we need parents to get involved in our cause. In addition to our Adopt a Teacher initiative we are starting an email campaign to get our legislators to make education a priority in the state of Nevada. On Feb 8th join us in writing email to legislators to tell them to make education a priority. Our children need us to fight for them to improve education.
Many of you have heard the news regarding the budget cuts to Clark County School District. It is time for parents to stop standing by while education is cut yet again. If you are a parent with a student in the Clark County school district you need to act. You need to get involved. Our kids are counting on us to speak up for them. Contact your legislator and demand that they make education funding a priority. As parents we can no longer stand by and do nothing.

On Feb 8th Adopt a Teacher by donating gift cards or office supplies to be donated to area teacher. Our teachers need our help to educate our kids.
Recently there was a news article which attempted to lay blame for NV education crisis on the feets of parents. As a concerned parent with two kids in the Clark County School District I was angered at the thought. But as I read I have to tell you some question came to mind. The article titled "Parents share blame for education woes". The authored asked many question which I feel we need to asking ourselves and those around us. How many parent are actually involved in our children's education? How many of us knows the names of our children's teacher? How many of us attend open houses? How many of us attend PTA meetings and actively participate? How many of us ensure the TV, video games, and radios are off and homework is done? Recently I was speaking to a parent and she was complaining about her kids having to take the proficiency exam. She explained that she didn't feel it was fair that her kids had to take a test on math that they didn't learn in school. That is the attitude of many parents and yet we have to ask why is there such low expectations for our students. Why is the test so hard for so many of our students and yet others are able to pass. Our students are not being prepared at home and sometimes in the schools. The fact that some are passing is an indication that some students are being taught what is on the test. Many parents are not ensuring that there students are taking math beyond algebra in school. So when it comes time to take the test the student is lost. I explained to that parent that if she knew the test contained algebra then it was her responsibility to ensure that her student was receiving help in algebra. She should have been monitoring her grades and when the student began to struggle she should have gotten her tutoring. The school district provides tutoring help for students and yet many parents don't utilize it. Many of our teachers are in the classrooms before school and stay late after school to tutor our kids. I get angry when I hear people complain about our teachers. They do a great job with limited resources and little thanks. They receive little if any support from many parents. The failures of our schools does to a degree lay on our feet and until we all step up and help our schools they are going to continue to fail.
Everyday our schools are struggling with limited resources. On Feb 8th I'm launching a Adopt a Teacher program to start helping to ensure that our teachers have the resources they need to be effective in the classroom. Join me by donating gift cards to be distributed to area teachers to ensure that our classrooms have what they need. If interested contact me at mspatrina@yahoo.com. It's time for our communities to get involved and stop complaining about our schools. It's time to go into our schools and make them better. I want to challenge anyone reading this to join a PTA. Any PTA for any school they can all use more help. Take time to go into the classroom and help. They can all use volunteers. Any investment in education whether by time or money is never wasted. This is the future of our state we are talking about!
On Feb 8th, 2009 I'm holding a community meeting to get parents, and the community more involved in the issues facing education. My house meeting is my attempt to get others to join me in Adopting our Teachers. We are all aware of what challenges our teachers and our schools face. Please join me in doing our part to show our teachers that we care about education here in Nevada. I'm attempting to purchase gift cards to be distributed to area teachers to be able to purchase the much needed school supplies. Many of you know about the budget cuts the school district is facing and the results of those are going to affect all our children. A dollar spent today on education is a dollar saved down the road by educating our young people. Please join me in doing something to assist our struggling school district and to show our teachers education does matter to us.
President elect Obama is about to be sworn in as the next President of the United States of America. For many of us who voted for Obama we are overjoyed to see that this day is upon us. Especially those of us within the black community, although his presidency is not merely about him being a black man. For us in the black community it is a proud moment to be shared with every American regardless of race. Over the last few weeks I have had numerous conversations with many different types of Americans from all different races, background, income level, and educational level. They all have so much enthusiasm for President elect Obama and what change he will bring to this country. Many of us know that the problems we will face will require more than four or even eight years to fix. But we know that we must be on the right path for us to see progress. The people have spoken and decided that we want the direction of our future to be President elect Obama's vision. The vision he spoke of during the campaign. I know that I didn't go into the voting booth looking for quick fixes to our nations problems. My vote was for the voice who believed in the same sense of responsibility and obligation to leave my children a better future than that which is being given to them today. When I speak to people about what Obama's Presidency will be I am quick to remind those who are looking to him to solve the problems we face in this country that our country's problems were not created by one man or one administration. The success of his Presidency rests on the shoulders of all of us who voted for him and his vision for our country. I am always quick to ask others what is there role in making his presidency successful? The education of our children must be a focus in this administration as the problems we face today will probably not be completely corrected in our lifetime. But we can change the direction of this country and prepare each generation that is too come to be prepared for the challenges to be faced. I am often amazed at how little importance is placed on educating our children. Why do we not educate our children to be good citizens and not just good standardized test takers. Why are our children allowed to graduate from high school within being prepared for life. Why are our kids not taught about money management in math? Energy conservation in science? Function of our government in Social Studies? Maintaining a healthly lifestyle in physical education? Now that I have addressed what our kids are not learning let's look at why they should be. Americans spend more save less and are living beyond their means. The result of this fiscal irresponsibility is the mortgage, credit, and lending crisis. The next generation needs to be able to budget, manage money, and maintain credit. Global warming is affecting all of us and yet we don't teach our kids about the importance of alternative energy. The next generation needs to be taught to conserve water, energy, and waste. We need to educate our children not just on wars fought hundreds of years ago but they need to be educated on issues facing us now. Healthcare is a major issues right now for many Americans. Why are we not doing more to educate our kids on what poor eating choices and not being physically fit will impact their lives in the future. To anyone reading this ask yourself what I am doing to improve education in my community? Are you involved in PTA? Are you coaching youth sports? Are you mentoring young people? Our most precious resource is our children and we must sacrifice in order to prepare them to lead. Please lend your voice to making education important in your community. It's not about getting hand outs from Washington anymore. Our children need each and every one of us to sacrifice to ensure that education is made a priority in our communities.
I ask each of you again-What are you doing to improve education in your community?
